Outdoor therapy is also considered “walk and talk” therapy. During the outdoor activity, we can process difficulties that you may be facing and incorporate other skills such as mindfulness and CBT. Self exploration can be hard for some people, being outdoors helps ease some tension and adds another element to help explore their inner self. These activities may be challenging at times but they are not made to push you over the edge and I will be there to help you every step of the way. Sessions last 45-60 min and are offered from early morning before school and into the afternoon.
On foot activities
The goal here is not to cover as many miles as we can, but we do what we can in the time frame while working on self exploration. Locations will be confined to Middlesex county. We will meet at the location and proceed from there. I ask that you come dressed for the occasion, but equipment can be provided. Privacy is important so some of the more popular trails and locations may not be used. There is still the possibility to cross other people in the woods and we will proceed at your comfort level.
Activities may include: Hiking, snowshoeing, disk golf, outdoor mindfulness activities, or walking to a peaceful spot.
Maybe going outside isn’t quite your thing and a typical office space is preferred. We can hold sessions in office, or virtually via Zoom, whatever is comfortable for you!
Coming soon: Water activities
Water is an incredible and powerful element, so why not use it for healing? These activates will be geared towards the beginner and will not include paddling in rivers or ocean. Depending on the activity there will be different regulations and I ask that all these are followed for everyone’s safety.
Activities may include: Canoeing (12 and older), kayaking (16 and older), or fishing.
Come Prepared:
Different times of the year call for different clothing, which we can discuss prior to sessions. All year long I do ask that you bring some water, a snack, extra layer, and a rain jacket just in case. It is better to have some of these items and not need them. If the weather unexpectedly disrupts the plan for an outdoor session, we can resort to the use of office space for session that day. The following are tips on how to dress and prepare for various outdoor sessions/settings:
Warmer Weather
Cotton is never recommended for outdoor activities but in warmer weather you can get away with it. Wicking socks and clothing will help keep you be more comfortable.
Sunscreen, sunglasses and bug spray may be beneficial.
Athletic shoes that can handle dirt, mud and have some traction, hiking boots are best.
Water Sports
Bathing suit or something that you would feel comfortable getting exposed to water (don't plan on going swimming).
Water shoes, sandals, or an old pair of shoes that can get wet.
Sunscreen and sunglasses
Cold Weather
Long sleeves and pants. In the winter cotton gets wet and freezes so it is not recommended for snow. Synthetic or wool is recommended.
Snow pants are great for keeping you dry and warm.
Gloves, facemask/scarf/neck warmer and hat. It is nicer to have them and not need them.
Snow boots if there is some sort of snow on the ground. Cold wet feet are unhappy feet.
Sunglasses or goggles are nice to have on sunny days with snow on the ground.
